Field Operations: Cages

The 1m x 1m plots are surrounded by a cage made of wood and window screen. The cages are 1.0m tall in the front and gradually slope up to 1.2m in the back.

Field Operations: Weeding

All plots are routinely weeded to keep the area free of unwanted plants and future seed sources.

Sampling

Vegetation was sampled by clipping 60cm x 5cm strips in early August, 1991. The sample was sorted to green of each species and litter before being dried and weighed. Soil solution concentrations of ammonium and nitrate will be sampled from each plot in May and September of each year. Counts of adult and nymph grasshoppers in each cage are made in June and August of each year, starting in 1992.
