Field Operations: Prescribed Burning

In 2006 each field was divided in half, and one half randomly chosen for periodic prescribed burning (approximately a fire every other year), see table below. All transects in Field 26 and the Lawrence Strip (LS) are excluded from burning.

Burn Treatment: 1 = transect included in prescribed burn when applied, 0 = transect is not burned. The fields included in this study are 4, 5, 10, 24, 26, 28, 35, 39, 41, 45, 53, 70, 72, 77 and the Lawrence strip that was abandoned in 1988. In 2001 new sampling was started in positions similar to the E054 plots in these E014 fields: 21, 27, 32, 40, 44, 47, 76.

aise054 - Aboveground biomass carbon and nitrogen

Sampling and lab analysis

Aboveground biomass was harvested in a 3 meter by 0.1 meter strip inside of E054 plots. The aboveground biomass was sorted by species, dried, and then weighed. Subsequently, the aboveground biomass and litter samples were aggregated by functional group (C3 grass, C4 grass, litter, legume, forb, sedge, wood, and moss or lichen) for C and N analysis. Vegetation samples were dried at 55 degrees Celcius.

Tissue carbon and nitrogen

Vegetation samples were ground using a Wiley mill (Thomas Scientific, Swedesboro, NJ). The ground samples were analyzed for total C and N with Costech ECS 4010 (Costech Analytical Technologies, Valencia, CA).

aite054 - Soil carbon and nitrogen

Sampling and lab analysis

2.5-cm-wide soil cores were taken at six following depth intervals: 0-10 cm, 10-20 cm, 20-40 cm, 40-60 cm, 60-80 cm and 80-100 cm. At each of the soil sampling locations, two cores that were 1 m apart were collected in 0-10 cm and 10-20 cm and then composited, while one core was collected in other depths. The soil samples were dried and sifted with 2 mm sieve to remove roots and pebbles.

Soil carbon and nitrogen instrumentation

The ground samples were analyzed for total C and N with Costech ECS 4010 (Costech Analytical Technologies, Valencia, CA).

aiue054 - Root biomass carbon and nitrogen

Root carbon nitrogen and biomass sampling

Root samples were collected in the clip strips with a 5-cm-wide corer at the same depths as soil sampling (n = 4 per field and per depth interval). The collected soil cores were washed over 1 mm screens to obtain the roots. Then the roots were dried and weighed.

Tissue carbon and nitrogen

Samples were ground using a Wiley mill (Thomas Scientific, Swedesboro, NJ). The ground samples were analyzed for total C and N with Costech ECS 4010 (Costech Analytical Technologies, Valencia, CA).
