Methods for Experiment 007 -

Field Operations: Fencing

Three out of the six plots in each of the two fields are fenced with poultry netting, approximately 2 meters high, to exclude deer. The plots were fenced in the fall of 1982.

Field Operations: Fertilization

The amount of fertilizer (NH4NO3) received by the plots fertilized is equal to the amount given to those plots receiving treatment "E" in E001. This is not the same rate that the plots in E001 receive, however. The rate for this experiment, with 25m2 plots, is 5.12g/m2 per application. This fertilizer was added in to a 1m2 area around the base of trees.

Sampling for A007

All trees in controls and exclosures were tagged, mapped, examined for browsing damage, and measured annually (maximum height) from 1983 through 1989. Soil cores were taken in the fall of 1983. Four cores in each 5 meter length, 2m apart across the middle of the 5 meters, were combined into one sample. This made 6 samples per plot. The cores were taken to a depth of 10cm. Pocket gopher mounds were mapped on these plots every year from 1986 to 1989. Future sampling will be done at variable intervals, probably every 3-5 years.

dre007 - Deer browse

Deer browse measurements

Trees, saplings, and seedlings were mapped, measured, and tagged in each plot beginning in spring 1983. By 1984 approximately 95% of these plants were tagged in each plot. Tagged plants were measured each spring and fall from 1983 to 1987, and in the spring in 1988, 1989, 1991, and 1992. At each census maximum height and evidence of deer browsing on lateral or terminal shoots was recorded. Deaths due to pocket gophers were identified.
