Insects of Cedar Creek
Order HOMOPTERA
Family CICADIDAE
(Cicadas)
Only a single species of Cicada (166 NA spp),
Tibicen
sp, appears to be found at CCESR. This medium-sized gray-and-green
species begins its incessant buzzing during the Dog Days of Summer in late
July continuing til early September. The grotesque nymphs are root feeders
on various trees and pass several years in the soil before emerging as
adults.
