Cedar Creek

The Mayflies (611 NA spp) are the oldest living order of winged insects. Naiads inhabit streams, lakes and ponds. Most have three caudal filaments, and hind wings are much smaller than forewings. Most are scavengers feeding on plant or animal debris. Naiad life may last from six weeks to four years, but most species are univoltine. Upon emerging the subimago flies to shore vegetation where it molts one final time, and the true adult takes to the wing. Most adults are short-lived and non-feeding. 17 families occur in North America, and 13 are found in Minnesota/Wisconsin? Most frequent clean streams, but some do inhabit stagnant lentic waters. Roughly 120 species have been collected in Wisconsin (Hilsenhoff, 1995), but little attention has been given to the Mayflies of Cedar Creek. It is likely that fewer than 30 species occur here. Families with Wisconsin representatives are in Bold Type. THIS SECTION REQUIRES MUCH WORK. SUGGEST YOU TRY THE LINK BELOW.
