Insects of Cedar Creek

Order THYSANURA

(Silverfish)

Members of this Order (18 NA spp) resemble the Bristletails, but have eyes that are reduced or absent, and Minnesota species have scaly bodies.  Three families (Lepidotrichidae, Nicoletiidae, Lepismatidae) occur in North America, but only the Lepismatidae is found in Minnesota.  This family contains the common Silverfish (Lepisma saccharina) and the Firebrat (Thermobia domestica).  Both occur in habitations at Cedar Creek where they feed on glue and starchy materials.

2. Family NICOLETIIDAE Subterranean Silverfish (occur in Texas and SE)
