Sampling D095

In 1990, a biomass strip was taken form each of the nine replicates. The 3m x 10cm strip was taken from the center of the 10m x 10m section in the most southeast corner of the first eight replicates (D1-D8), and from the most southwest section of D9.

In June of 1991, all trees and saplings were spatially mapped within the 50m x 20m plots, their dbh measured and heights and vigor estimated. Growth response of the trees was also measured. Two or three individuals of N pin oak and bur oak were selected in each replicate. A single long core (using an increment hammer) are removed on opposite sides of the tree. Tree canopy area was measured in 8 directions (N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W, NW) from the base of the tree.

In August of 1991, eight 0.5m x 1m quadrats were systematically laid every 6m along the central 0 to 50m line within the replicate, beginning at the 3m mark (3-4, 9-10, 15-16, 21-22, 27-28, 33-34, 39-40, 45-46). Quadrats were laid on the S side of the line, with the long side of the quadrat against the line. Herbaceous cover was recorded, canopy cover directly overhead was estimated, and a fish eye photo was taken from 30cm above the ground.
