The purpose of this survey is to examine the variation in oak savanna and woodland structure, composition and age history along a topographic/disturbance gradient. This data will be used to assess the prescribed burn programs at both Allison savanna (TNC property) and Cedar Creek Natural History Area. A series of plots were established beginning in open savanna at Allison savanna south of the southeast corner of CCNHA and extending to oak woodland near Cedar Bog Lake in the north central part of CCNHA. Each plot is 75m x 50m. Along the baseline, a permanent stake was placed at the 0, 25, 50, and 75m mark. A similar set of stakes were placed 50m away. Using these stakes, 4 transects can be established, each 50m in length. Six sections (25m X 25m) can also be created by drawing a line across the 25m mark (these are numbered 1-6). At the corner of each section by the stakes, two nested plots are located, first a 10m x 10m (for saplings) then a 3.2m x 3.2m (for shrubs and seedlings). In total, 25 plots were sampled, including 11 of the 12 plots from E015 (excluding plot 13). No soils data were gathered in 1990, but topographic position and distance to water table were calculated. Structure and composition of the woody and herbaceous vegetation were described using a modified plot method from that of E015. Carbon isotope samples were taken in 13 plots in August of 1990. For a list of treatments of those plots from E015, see the treatment layouts in file trmte15.
