This experiment was set up and completed during the 1990 field season. The objective of this experiment was to test whether the intensity of competition varies with productivity in a variety of sites, using a simple field experiment that could be applied by several investigators working independently. Thirty Poa pratensis seedlings were planted in two fields, field "D", high productivity level, and field "E", low productivity level. The 30 transplants in each field were separated into 3 groups of ten with each group being at least 30 meters from the nearest neighboring group. Half of the seedlings in each field were randomly chosen to receive the control treatment. The other half received the no-neighbor treatment. This consisted of removing all existing above ground vegetation and cutting the roots belowground with a shovel. All sixty transplants were surrounded by a grazer-excluder fence to discourage herbivory. The no-neighbor plots were kept neighbor-free throughout the ninety day experiment. The transplants and their neighbors (dead and alive) were harvested after 90 days, dried and weighed. The experiment was then terminated and removed from the fields. For a list of treatments, see the treatment layouts in file Link==>e076/treatment trmte76.
