Experiment 073

Fertilization and Removal Experiment

Summary

This experiment was set up in Field E and in Field C. In Field E, the fertilizations used were treatments G (50g/m2 N) and I (control = nothing added). These fertilization treatments were crossed with the following removals:

1. Agropyron repens removed + 100 holes punched in the ground with a knife
2. Agrostis scabra removed
3. Both Agropyron repens and Agrostis scabra removed
4. Control = 100 holes punched in the ground with a knife

Thirty-two plots (2 x 4 x 4 reps each=32) were chosen in an area where Agrostis scabra was dominant. Each plot was established where at least 1 (<3) ramet of Agropyron repens was present. Each plot is a circle with a 50cm diameter. Galvanized sheet metal was pounded into the ground around each plot. Removals were done with a small paring knife or by hand (just below ground level). In Field C, 32 plots of the same size were set up inside the fenced "micro plot" area (E001). The same fertilization treatments (G & I) were crossed with the following removals:

1. Poa pratensis and Agropyron repens removed
2. Schizachyrium scoparium removed
3. Poa pratensis, Agropyron repens and Schizachyrium scoparium removed
4. Control

Galvanized sheet metal was pounded into the ground around each plot. Removals were done by painting a Roundup solution, of 3.91ml Roundup added to 200ml water, onto the leaves of each plant to be removed. Soil cores of 2.5cm diameter x 10cm deep were taken near the center of each plot in both fields E and C for N analysis (before Roundup treatment). For a list of treatments, see the treatment layouts in file trmte73.
