In 1989, at the termination of the experiment, grasshopper densities were sampled in a 10m x 10m portion of the macroplot adjacent to the grasshopper cages. The density of each grasshopper species compared with that in the cages was the average over three macroplots within a fertilizer treatment. Vegetation was sampled after cages were pulled up within the 40cm x 40cm area contained by the cage. All plants within the 40cm x 40cm area were clipped. Plants were sorted to species, dried at 45 degrees C and weighed. Vegetation was sampled in 1990 in the same way as in 1989.
