This experiment used all of the 17 sites of E044. There are three treatments:
1. control = 100% C
2. C/N = 10:1
3. C/N = 50:1.
Pure cellulose strips (2.5cm wide and 25cm long) were soaked in the appropriate Ammonium chloride solution to get the ratios 100% C, 10:1 C/N and 50:1 C/N. The cellulose strips were installed vertically into the soil as a source of carbon. This experiment was replicated through time with three replicates per sampling date. Seven sampling dates were set at time 0, 2 weeks, 4 weeks, 8 weeks, 16 weeks, 32 weeks and 64 weeks. On sampling dates, the strips were pulled out of the ground and changes in C and N were measured.
