Field Operations for E005
Fertilization: Fertilizer is mixed and spread by hand twice a year, once in early May and once in late June. Each plot gets the fertilizer mixture specified by its fertilizer treatment code. For a list of fertilizer treatments for each plot, see file trmte05.
Fencing and Herbivore Exclusion: There are 4 fence exclosures, each designed to exclude a specific group of herbivores. In addition there is a fence to exclude all 4 groups, a fence that excludes no herbivores to measure fence effects, and a plot with no fence as a control. Exclosures are 2m x 4m and are located in macroplot subsections 3 and 8. Herbivore treatments are randomly placed in the grid. To exclude all herbivores, a deep fence, Sevin and Diazanon were used. A shallow fence was used to exclude voles. Sevin was used to exclude foliage-feeding insects and Diazanon was used to exclude belowground invertebrates.
Burning: Starting in 1989, two sections in each macroplot were burned in fields B and C. Each macroplot is divided into 5 sections. In each macroplot, the center section and 1 section on either the east or west side of it were burned. For a list of burn treatments for each plot, see files trmte04. See E004 for Burn Doc for information on wildfire in 1995.
