Plants of Cedar Creek

 Family URTICACEAE

(Nettle Family)

The only commonly encountered Nettle is Urtica dioica (Stinging Nettle).  It occurs in disturbed marshy areas and gardens.   Boehmeria cylindrica (False Nettle) appears occasionally in swamps and wetland margins.  Two species of Pilea (Clearweeds) P. fontana and P. pumila are occasionally encountered in marshes and lowland woods. Parietaria pensylvanica (Pellitory) is a weedy species associated with trails in pine-oak forests and is uncommon here.  Pilea and Parietaria are annuals while Urtica and Boehmeria are perennial.

*Laportea canadensis (Wood Nettle) is a common floodplain stinging nettle, but it does not occur at Cedar Creek.
