Cedar Creek
Natural History Area

Plants of Cedar Creek

 Family TYPHACEAE

(Cattail Family)

Three species of Typha (Cattails) are found on the Area.  T. angustifolia (Narrow-leaved Cattail) occurs in the deeper water of Fish Lake.  T. latifolia (Broad-leaved Cattail) is ubiquitous in many of the Area’s marshes.  The former has male and female catkins separated.  Catkins are adjacent in broad-leaved cattails.  These two species readily hybridize producing T. glauca, an aggressive wetland hybrid.
