Family OLEACEAE

(Olive Family)

The genera Fraxinus (Ash) and Syringa (Lilac) are members of the Olive Family.  Syringa vulgaris  (Common Lilac) is an introduced household ornamental found at the lab and several homesites.  It comes in both white and lavendar varieties. Fraxinus nigra (Black Ash) is a common tree of swampy wetlands, and F. pennsylvanica (Green Ash) is a fairly common invader of upland fields.

Fraxinus americana (White Ash) occurs in mesic forests in eastern Minnesota, but is absent from the Anoka Sandplain.
