Family JUNCACEAE

(Rush Family)

    Eleven species of Juncus (Rushes) are found on the Area.  Most have an affinity for wet areas, many are uncommon and difficult to identify.  The most common are J. tenuis along wooded trails and J. greenei along the edge of wet depressions. J. alpinoarticulatus, J. brevicaudatus, J. dudleyi, J. nodosus, and J. pelocarpus can be found along the sandy shore of Fish Lake during periods of low water. J. balticus and J. vasei  occur along the edge of wet depressions; J. bufonius (Toad Rush) on moist ground along North Section trails; J. canadensis (Canada Rush) on the Beckman Lake sedge mat.

    Luzula multiflora (Upright Wood Rush) occurs along the edge of wet depressions.
