Plants of Cedar Creek

Family EUPHORBIACEAE

(Spurge Family)

The genus Euphorbia is the dominant genus in the Spurge Family.  E. corollata (Flowering Spurge) is a tall fairly common forb of old fields.  The remaining three species (E. geyeri, E. glyptosperma, E. maculata) are small prostrate plants.  The first two occur in xeric fields and savannas, while the last mentioned is found along roadsides.  E. esula (Leafy Spurge) is an invasive weedy species found along the south bank of Fish Lake in 2000 and destroyed. Not recorded in Delaney Catalog.  Fortunately, it is not yet established on Cedar Creek.  Vigilance is required.

Acalypha rhomboidea (Three-seeded Mercury) is an uncommon opportunistic plant of swamps.  Once found in the black ash swamp west of Corneia’s Cabin and the rim of NEM south of Fish Lake.
