Cedar Creek
Natural History Area

Plants of Cedar Creek

Family CUPRESSACEAE

(Cypress Family)

Three representatives of the Cypress Family are found on the Area.  Extensive tracts of Thuja occidentalis (White Cedar) occur in the lowlands surrounding Cedar Bog Lake and Ice Lake as well as a smaller tract south of the Lab. Juniperus communis (Bush Juniper) is a nearly continuous understory shrub in Stillwell Savanna which was formerly heavily grazed by cattle (1972).  It is also found in several old fields and savannas.  J. virginiana (Red Cedar) is an uncommon species here, occurring sporadically as seedlings and only attaining adult size in a few field and savanna areas.
