Family CORNACEAE

(Dogwood Family)

    Members of the Dogwood Family are primarily woody shrubs of swamp and forest.  Leaves when pulled apart have latexy strings dangling from the veins. Three common species of shrubby Cornus (Dogwoods) found on the Area are C. alternifolia (Pagoda Dogwood) in mesic woods, C. stolonifera (Red-osier Dogwood) in marshes and shrub-carr, and C. foemina (=C. racemosa: Graybark Dogwood) at woods edges. C. rugosa (Round-leaved Dogwood) has only been found in mesic woods near the Lab and near the Lundgren homesite.

Cornus canadensis (Bunchberry) is a fairly common understory forb of lowland woods.
