Plants of Cedar Creek

Family CHENOPODIACEAE

(Goosefoot Family)

Five species of the weedy Goosefoot Family are found on the Area.  All are annuals on disturbed sites and gardens.  They include three species of ChenopodiumC. album (Common Lamb’s Quarters), C. desiccatum (=leptophyllum: Narrow-leaved Lamb’s Quarters).  C. simplex (Maple-leaved  Goosefoot) is uncommon; it tends to show up after burns in oak savanna. Salsola ibirica (=kali: Russian Thistle) is a common species of roadsides and gopher mounds. Cycloloma atriplicifolium (Winged Pigweed) is a purple-colored tumbleweed of xeric sites, common along East Bethel Blvd.
