Plants of Cedar Creek

Family CARYOPHYLLACEAE

(Pink Family)

    Of the eight species of Pinks found on the Area, five are introduced species.  Cerastium vulgatum (Mouse-ear chickweed) occurs in disturbed upland woods. Dianthus deltoides (Maiden Pink) is found at Corneia’s Cabin.  Saponaria officinalis (Bouncing Bet) occurs at South House. Stellaria media along disturbed woodland trails.  Silene latifolia (=Lychnis alba) is a common weed in old fields and disturbed woodlands.

    Of the Native Pinks, Arenaria lateriflora (Sandwort) and Stellaria longifolia are found in savanna and wood’s openings along NSLR.  Silene antirrhina (Sticky Catchfly) is a common native weed in xeric fields.

A number of other introduced species in the above genera as well as introduced species of Agrostemma, Gypsophila, Myosoton, Vaccaria may well turn up at Cedar Creek.
