Plants of Cedar Creek

Family CAMPANULACEAE

(Bluebell Family)

Three species of Campanula (Bluebells) are found on the Area. C. rotundifolia (Blue Harebell) is fairly common in savanna and open woods.  C. aparinoides (Marsh Bellflower) is a common white-flowered species of marshes. C. rapunculoides (European Bellflower) is an introduced plant found at a few homesites.

Now included in this family are two species of Lobelia. L. spicata is a small pale blue-flowered species that is fairly common in savanna and the rim of wet depressions.  L. siphilitica has large rich blue flowers and occurs in a few marshes (RRF) and in damp sand along the east shore of Fish Lake.

********

Lobelia cardinalis has brilliant red flowers, is commonly planted in gardens, but naturally occurs in floodplain along the Mississippi River in SE Minnesota and as near as the St. Croix River 30 miles east of Cedar Creek. The genus Triodanis (Venus Looking-glass) also occurs in this Family, but is not found at Cedar Creek.
