Family BORAGINACEAE

(Borage Family)

Lithospermum caroliniense (Hairy Puccoon) is the most common early-flowering species of the Borage Family at Cedar Creek. Yellow tubular flowers come in Pin and Thrum varieties.  It is found in savannas and many old fields. L. canescens (Hoary Puccoon) has smaller, more orangey flowers and is most common in the burn savanna area south of Fish Lake.  Hackelia americana (Nodding Stickseed) is a nasty bur-fruited species of woodland trails.

Lithospermum incisum is a common Minnesota prairie plant, though not found on the Anoka Sandplain. It has wrinkly-margined pale-yellow flowers Other genera found in Minnesota but not represented at Cedar Creek include: Cynoglossum, Echium, Lappula, Mertensia, Myosotis, Onosmodium, Plagiobotrys...
