Plants of Cedar Creek

Family ARACEAE

(Arum Family)

The Arum family contains three attractive forbs of lowland hardwoods and forested swamps. Our members illustrate well the family feature of spathe (modified leaf) partly enclosing the spadex (flowering-bearing stalk). Arisaema triphyllum (Jack-in-the-Pulpit) is quite common in moist but not wet woods. Symplocarpus foetidus (Skunk Cabbage) surrounds much of the knoll west of Norris Cabin. Calla palustris (Wild Calla) is an uncommon plant in our peatlands but can be easily found in shallow pools along the boardwalk to Cedar Bog Lake.

********

*Acorus calamus (Sweet Flag) is widespread in Minnesota, but has not been collected at Cedar Creek.
