Family APOCYNACEAE

(Dogbane Family)

Representing the Dogbane Family are three species of Apocynum.  All have simple leaves and a white milky sap.  The most common species, A. androsaemifolium (Spreading dogbane), is found in old fields, savannas, and woodlands. A. sibiricum and A. cannabinum occur in similar habitats.  All three species are reported to hybridize and while spreading dogbane is distinct, the other two are difficult to distinguish.  A. sibiricum seems to be occasional and the 1967 specimen of A. cannabinum is of questionable identity .
