Cedar Creek
Natural History Area

Plants of Cedar Creek

Family ACERACEAE

(Maple Family)

Six species of Acer (Maples) are found on the Area.  Two occur as plantings.  Acer ginnala (Amur Maple) is found at Corneia’s and A. saccharinum (Silver Maple) at Crane House.  A. rubrum (Red Maple) is a common species of lowland hardwoods and hardwood swamps.  A. negundo (Box Elder) is common at several homesites.  A. saccharum (Sugar Maple) is found only on Crone and Katie’s Knolls—both surrounded by swamp and thus protected from the occasional fires of surrounding sandy uplands.  A solitary A. spicatum (Mountain Maple) was found near the Lab in 2001.
