Brian Baumgart

Brian is a poet and writer. Much of his recent work has focused on the environment around him, and he is particularly interested in ecosystem connections, biodiversity and the complexity of the natural environment. In his residency year, he sought out novel ways to incorporate science and scientific results into compelling poems for his project "We Are All Music-Makers: Science in Poetry". He writes: "I like to interact with—and observe—scientists and staff as they go about their work on the reserve, learning not just about the individual projects in place but also about the processes taken in environmental sciences, as both structure and observation are major aspects of poetic innovation and development."

Brian lives in Oak Grove with his family and teaches at North Hennepin Community College, where he is also the coordinator of the Creative Writing AFA program. He has also taught at Century College, MN State University in Mankato and Rasmussen College. He is a regular participant in readings across the Twin Cities and the Midwest. You can read some of his recent work in the Journal of Wild Culture.
